Can You Wear Hearing Aids While Swimming on Holiday?

Published: August 2026

Packing for a summer holiday brings plenty of excitement, but if you wear hearing aids, navigating poolside relaxation, beach trips, and swimming requires a little extra preparation.

One of the most frequent questions our audiologists receive during summer is: “Can I wear my hearing aids while swimming or taking a dip in the sea?”

Here is what you need to know to protect your hearing technology while enjoying your holiday to the fullest.

Are Hearing Aids Waterproof?

In short, most modern hearing aids are water-resistant, but very few are 100% waterproof.

Most contemporary devices feature an IP68 rating, meaning they can withstand accidental splashes, light rain, or sweat during a warm holiday walk. However, prolonged submersion under pool or sea water is an entirely different story:

  • Pool Water: Chlorine and pool chemicals can break down the protective rubber seals and corrode sensitive internal electronics.

  • Sea Water: Saltwater is highly corrosive to delicate metal circuitry and leaves salt crystals behind as it dries, which can block microphones and receivers.

Simple Rules for Water Activities on Holiday

To avoid accidental damage and costly repairs while away, keep these holiday tips in mind:

  1. Remove Before Swimming: Always take your hearing aids off before diving into the pool, riding water slides, or swimming in the ocean.

  2. Use a Secure Protective Case: Never wrap your devices in a paper towel or leave them loose on a sun lounger. Keep a sturdy, water-tight storage case in your beach bag to keep them safe from sand, heat, and splashes.

  3. Beware of Sunscreen & Insect Repellent: Apply lotions and sprays before inserting your hearing aids, and ensure your hands are clean and dry when handling them.

  4. Dry Moisture Immediately: If you get caught in a sudden downpour or heavy spray, dry your devices gently with a soft microfibre cloth and open the battery doors (if applicable) to air out.

Enjoy the Sounds of Summer Safely

Taking your hearing aids out for a swim doesn’t mean missing out on holiday fun. By keeping a safe storage case handy, you can protect your investment and enjoy crystal-clear hearing for every dinner, excursion, and evening show throughout your trip.
