Ear Wax Removal

Allerton Hearing

Excess ear wax can cause hearing loss

Ear wax is produced by glands in the ear canal. It’s purpose is to trap dust and other small particles to prevent them from reaching, and potentially damaging, the eardrum.

The quantity of ear wax produced varies greatly from person to person, and for some the wax does not come out of the ear naturally and forms a blockage or plug that might need removing. This blockage can cause hearing loss, irritation and pain.

If you book a free hearing test, we will also check your ears for excess ear wax, alternatively, if you are confident that you require ear wax removal, you can request an ear wax removal appointment without a hearing test.

Good to know

We would highly recommend adding olive oil to your ear(s) 4 days before your appointment. You can buy medical grade olive oil specifically for this purpose over the counter, please see specific instructions. 3 drops in the morning and again in the evening is usually sufficient. This will help loosen and soften impacted ear wax before removal.

Ear wax removal at Allerton Hearing costs £40 for one ear, or £70 for both ears.  If you do need to come back for a second visit to take care of extra stubborn ear wax build up, this is included at no extra charge.

Before your wax removal we will examine your ear canal and advise you whether or not the procedure is required. If there is no wax there is a £30 charge for the appointment.

What to expect

We are fully equipped with the latest technology to ensure that we can effectively provide all our patients with relief from ear wax build up.

We will use a display to see the inside of your ears before carefully and expertly removing excess wax using micro-suction technology. We do not use alternative (candles) or older syringing methods that can lead to increased pressure in the ear and an added risk of infection post removal. These methods are no longer recommended by the British Society of Audiology (BSA).

Micro-suction is the current method recommended by the BSA, it is effective, safe and pain free.
